Caramelised Red Onion Gravy recipe

There's nothing quite like the flavour of red onion gravy - especially when the onions have been cooked low and slow with a little brown sugar for flavour. This simple gravy recipe is super delicious with all sorts of sweet vegetables.

  • 2 red onions
  • 300ml beef stock
  • 100ml red wine
  • 1 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp. flour
  • 1 tbsp. oil
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper

  1. Thinly slice the red onions. Heat the oil in a pan and add the onions. Cook for 5-10 minutes, until beginning to soften, then add the sugar and cook for another 10 minutes or so over a low heat.

  2. Sprinkle the flour in and cook for a couple of minutes.

  3. Stir in the wine, stock and Worcestershire sauce and season well with salt and pepper.

  4. Simmer for ten minutes or so until slightly thickened.

Make this gravy even easier by simply using a few tbsp. of jarred caramelised red onions instead of the onions and sugar. This recipe serves 4.
